Uganda Safaris
Tailor-Made Safari Journeys Through Uganda
Track mountain gorillas in Bwindi and Mgahinga, meet chimpanzees in Kibale, explore the savannah and waterways of Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls, and venture into remote Kidepo Valley. Our Uganda safaris are individually designed around primate permits, wildlife priorities, carefully selected lodges, realistic travel times and the way you want to experience the country.
Tailor-Made Uganda Safaris Designed Around You
An Uganda safari can combine some of Africa’s most distinctive primate encounters with a much broader wildlife journey. Mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi and Mgahinga and chimpanzee tracking in Kibale can be paired with game drives, boat safaris and classic wildlife viewing in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Murchison Falls and Kidepo Valley. The result is a varied journey through rainforest, volcanic highlands, savannah, wetlands and major river systems.
At Go Beyond Safaris, we design tailor-made Uganda safaris around the experiences that matter most to you. We coordinate primate permits, trekking sectors, carefully selected lodges, road transfers and domestic flights, while balancing forest activities with conventional safari time so the itinerary feels considered rather than rushed. In Bwindi especially, lodge selection needs to work with the correct gorilla trekking sector as well as the wider route.
Whether Uganda is your main safari destination or the primate-focused chapter of a wider East Africa journey, we shape the trip around your dates, mobility, preferred level of comfort and wildlife priorities. That may mean a focused gorilla and chimpanzee safari, a western circuit through Kibale, Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi, or a longer itinerary adding Murchison Falls or remote Kidepo Valley.
Best Destinations for a Uganda Safari
A rewarding Uganda safari is usually built around contrast rather than one single park. Bwindi and Mgahinga offer mountain gorillas and forest trekking, Kibale is Uganda’s leading chimpanzee destination, Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls add classic wildlife and boat safaris, while remote Kidepo Valley brings a very different northern wilderness experience. Lake Mburo can add a useful savannah stop within a south-western route.
Our Africa-born team helps you choose the right combination according to primate permits, travel dates, wildlife priorities, lodge location, mobility and the amount of time you want to spend on the road. Whether your focus is gorilla trekking, chimpanzees, conventional game viewing, river safaris, birdlife or a broader East Africa journey, we create tailor-made Uganda safaris with a natural and realistic flow.
Bwindi Safaris
Track mountain gorillas in ancient rainforest, with carefully planned permits, lodge positioning and time to experience Uganda’s most iconic primate destination.
Kibale Safaris
Track chimpanzees beneath the forest canopy in Uganda’s leading primate region, with excellent birdlife and natural connections to Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Queen Elizabeth Safaris
Combine game drives, crater landscapes and Kazinga Channel boat safaris, with elephants, buffalo, hippos, birdlife and the Ishasha sector.

Murchison Falls Safaris
Explore broad savannah and the Nile by vehicle and boat, with giraffes, elephants, hippos, crocodiles, birdlife and the drama of Murchison Falls.
Kidepo Valley Safaris
Venture into Uganda’s remote north-east for lions, buffalo, elephants, giraffes, ostriches, open plains and a quieter wilderness safari.
Mgahinga Safaris
Combine mountain gorillas and golden monkeys with bamboo forest, Virunga scenery and a quieter south-western primate experience.
Lake Mburo Safaris
Add zebras, impalas, giraffes, birdlife and walking or vehicle-based wildlife viewing in a compact park that fits naturally into many south-western Uganda routes.
When to Go on a Uganda Safari
Uganda can be visited throughout the year, but the best time for a Uganda safari depends on the balance you want between primate trekking, conventional wildlife, road conditions, birdlife and visitor levels. Mountain gorillas and chimpanzees are present year-round, so seasonality is less about whether the primates are there and more about trail conditions, rainfall, travel comfort and the wider safari experience.
The generally drier periods are popular because forest trails and roads are often easier, while wetter months bring intensely green landscapes, strong birdlife and fewer visitors. Rain can fall in Bwindi, Mgahinga and Kibale at any time, so even a dry-season itinerary should be planned for changing forest conditions.
Main Dry Season
June to September
June to September is one of the most popular periods for Uganda safaris. Forest trails are often more manageable, road travel can be easier, and the combination of gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking and savannah wildlife works particularly well. Conditions still vary by region, and rain remains possible in the forests.
Short Dry Season
December to February
December to February provides a second useful dry-season window. It is well suited to primate-focused journeys and broader wildlife itineraries, with generally drier conditions while the landscapes remain green. This can be an excellent period for combining Bwindi, Kibale and Uganda’s savannah parks.
Rainy / Green Season
March to May & October to November
Uganda’s wetter periods can still be rewarding, particularly for travellers who value lush forest, birdlife, fewer visitors and a greener landscape. Gorilla and chimpanzee tracking continues, but trails can be muddier, road conditions more variable and trekking more physically demanding, making careful route planning more important.
Where to Go on a Uganda Safari
Uganda is not a single-style safari destination. Its appeal lies in the contrast between mountain rainforest, chimpanzee forest, open savannah, major river systems, volcanic highlands and remote northern wilderness, with each region adding a very different type of wildlife experience.
For many travellers, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi form the strongest western and south-western route. Kibale provides chimpanzee tracking, Queen Elizabeth adds game drives and the Kazinga Channel, and Bwindi delivers the mountain gorilla experience. This combination gives a first Uganda safari excellent variety without forcing the itinerary across the entire country.
Murchison Falls can be added when there is enough time for a longer northern loop, while Kidepo Valley is best treated as a deliberate remote extension rather than another quick stop. Mgahinga can deepen the primate element with gorillas, golden monkeys and volcanic scenery, and Lake Mburo can add a convenient wildlife stop within a south-western route. We combine these regions around permits, lodge location, travel time and your preferred pace so the journey feels complete rather than crowded.
Bwindi Gorilla Safaris
Mountain Gorillas in Uganda’s Ancient Rainforest
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the centrepiece of many Uganda safaris and one of Africa’s most important mountain gorilla destinations. The experience takes you on foot into dense, biologically rich rainforest in south-western Uganda, where trekking times and conditions can vary considerably from one day to the next.
A well-planned Bwindi safari starts with the gorilla permit and the trekking sector, because these influence where you should stay and how the wider route should be arranged. We match the lodge, road transfers or domestic flights, porter support and number of nights to your itinerary so the gorilla experience feels properly paced rather than treated as a rushed add-on.
Highlights of a Bwindi Gorilla Safari
- Track habituated mountain gorillas in their natural rainforest habitat with experienced guides
- Plan lodge location and transfers around the gorilla permit and correct trekking sector
- Use porter support and realistic pacing to make the forest trek more comfortable
- Combine Bwindi with Kibale, Queen Elizabeth or Mgahinga for a broader Uganda itinerary
Kibale Chimpanzee Safaris
Chimpanzees, Primates and Rainforest
Kibale National Park is Uganda’s leading chimpanzee-tracking destination and an important part of a primate-led safari. Its rainforest supports an exceptional diversity of primates, with chimpanzees as the principal draw alongside red colobus, black-and-white colobus, L’Hoest’s monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys and other forest species.
Chimpanzee tracking has a very different feel from gorilla trekking in Bwindi. The animals can be more active and mobile, and the forest experience is shaped by sound, movement and changing visibility beneath the canopy. Kibale combines particularly well with Queen Elizabeth National Park, creating a natural transition from rainforest and primates to game drives, savannah and the Kazinga Channel.
Highlights of a Kibale Chimpanzee Safari
- Track habituated chimpanzees in one of Uganda’s most important primate forests
- Look for red colobus, black-and-white colobus and other primates beneath the canopy
- Add nearby wetland and birding experiences for greater forest and wildlife variety
- Combine Kibale with Queen Elizabeth National Park for a natural forest-to-savannah route
Queen Elizabeth Safaris
Game Drives, Boat Safaris & the Ishasha Sector
Queen Elizabeth National Park brings a very different dimension to a Uganda safari, combining open savannah, crater landscapes, wetlands and the wildlife-rich Kazinga Channel. Game drives across the Kasenyi Plains can reveal lions, elephants, buffalo and antelope, while boat safaris along the channel provide close views of hippos, crocodiles, elephants and prolific birdlife.
Further south, the Ishasha sector is particularly well known for its tree-climbing lions and makes a natural connection between Queen Elizabeth and the gorilla trekking regions of Bwindi.
For many tailor-made Uganda safaris, Queen Elizabeth works especially well between Kibale and Bwindi, adding classic game viewing and time on the water between the country’s major primate experiences. The right lodge and sector depend on the wider route, whether you want easier access to the Kazinga Channel and Kasenyi Plains or a quieter stay further south towards Ishasha.
Highlights of a Murchison Falls Safari
- Game drives across the Kasenyi Plains and surrounding savannah
- Boat safaris on the Kazinga Channel
- Elephants, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles and varied plains wildlife
- Tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector
- Excellent combination with Kibale and Bwindi
- Strong option for adding classic safari experiences to a primate-focused itinerary
Murchison Falls Safaris
Nile River Wildlife, Boat Safaris and Waterfall Scenery
Murchison Falls National Park adds a strong river and open-savannah dimension to a Uganda safari. The Nile runs through broad wildlife country before being forced through a narrow gorge at Murchison Falls, creating a journey that can combine conventional game drives, river-based wildlife viewing and one of Uganda’s most dramatic natural landmarks.
Boat safaris on the Nile are a defining part of the experience, with opportunities to see hippos, crocodiles, elephants, giraffes, buffalo and abundant birdlife along the riverbanks. Game drives add open-country wildlife and big landscapes, while the falls themselves bring a very different sense of scale and energy. We position Murchison Falls within longer Uganda itineraries when the extra travel genuinely strengthens the journey rather than simply adding another park.
Highlights of a Murchison Falls Safari
- Explore the Nile by boat for hippos, crocodiles, elephants, giraffes and riverbank wildlife
- Combine river safaris with game drives across open savannah and woodland
- Experience the force and scenery of Murchison Falls itself
- Combine Murchison Falls with Kibale or Kidepo on a longer Uganda safari
Kidepo Valley Safaris
Remote Savannah, Big Skies and Northern Uganda Wildlife
Kidepo Valley National Park brings a very different character to a Uganda safari. Far in the country’s north-east, its open savannah, rugged mountain backdrops and broad valleys create a sense of space that contrasts sharply with the forests of Bwindi, Kibale and Mgahinga. Wildlife can include lions, buffalo, elephants, giraffes, zebras, ostriches and a strong variety of dry-country birds.
Kidepo is a deliberate remote extension rather than a park we add simply to lengthen an itinerary. Its distance from Uganda’s western circuit means the route needs to be planned carefully around road time or domestic flights, lodge choice and the number of nights available. For travellers with enough time, that remoteness is precisely the appeal: quieter game viewing, expansive landscapes and a safari experience that feels distinctly different from the primate-led south-west.
Highlights of a Kidepo Valley Safari
- Search for lions, buffalo, elephants, giraffes, zebras and other northern Uganda wildlife
- Explore open savannah, broad valleys, distant ridgelines and big skies
- Enjoy strong birdlife and a quieter wilderness atmosphere with fewer visitors
- Add Kidepo as a remote extension to a longer Uganda safari
Mgahinga Gorilla Safaris
Mountain Gorillas, Golden Monkeys and Virunga Volcanoes
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers a quieter mountain-forest experience in Uganda’s Virunga foothills. The park protects mountain gorillas and endangered golden monkeys, while bamboo forest, montane vegetation and the volcanic peaks of the Virunga Range give the area a strong sense of place that differs from Bwindi.
Mgahinga can work particularly well for travellers who want to deepen the primate component of their Uganda safari. Gorilla trekking can be combined with golden monkey tracking, while the volcanic landscape adds opportunities for hiking and a very different style of mountain scenery. We plan Mgahinga around permits, lodge location, access through Kisoro and how the park complements rather than duplicates time already spent in Bwindi.
Highlights of a Mgahinga Gorilla Safari
- Track mountain gorillas in a quieter Virunga mountain setting
- Look for endangered golden monkeys in bamboo and montane forest
- Experience volcanic scenery, forest trails and the peaks of the Virunga Range
- Combine Mgahinga with Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth or a wider south-west Uganda route
Lake Mburo Safaris
Zebras, Walking Safaris and a Convenient Western Route
Lake Mburo National Park is a compact savannah park that can fit naturally into an overland journey between central Uganda and the south-west. Its mosaic of grassland, woodland, wetlands and lakes supports zebras, impalas, eland, buffalo, waterbuck, hippos and a rich variety of birdlife, creating a useful contrast before or after Uganda’s forest regions.
The park’s value is as much about activity variety and location as sheer scale. Game drives can be complemented by boat safaris and guided walking experiences, giving travellers a chance to explore outside the vehicle where conditions and park arrangements allow. We generally use Lake Mburo when it improves the flow of a western Uganda itinerary, rather than treating it as a compulsory stop on every safari.
Highlights of a Lake Mburo Safari
- Look for zebras, impalas, eland, buffalo and other plains wildlife
- Explore a compact mix of savannah, woodland, wetlands and lakes
- Add guided walking or boat-based activities alongside conventional game drives
- Use Lake Mburo as a well-positioned stop within a south-western Uganda route
Uganda Safari Itinerary Ideas
Uganda is most rewarding when its primate forests and classic wildlife regions are connected into one well-paced journey. Depending on your travel dates, trekking priorities, preferred comfort level and available time, we can design an itinerary around mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, savannah wildlife, boat safaris and more remote wilderness areas.
Bwindi & Kibale Primate Safari
A primate-led journey combining mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi with chimpanzee tracking in Kibale. Ideal for travellers whose priority is meaningful time with Uganda’s great apes, with permits, trekking sectors, lodge locations and travel days carefully coordinated.
Kibale, Queen Elizabeth & Bwindi Safari
A classic western Uganda route moving from Kibale’s chimpanzee forests into Queen Elizabeth National Park for game drives and a Kazinga Channel boat safari before continuing to Bwindi for mountain gorillas. This is one of Uganda’s strongest combinations of primates and traditional safari wildlife.
Murchison Falls & Kidepo Wilderness Safari
A more wildlife-led northern journey pairing the Nile, game drives and boat safaris of Murchison Falls with the remote savannah landscapes of Kidepo Valley. Best suited to travellers with enough time to appreciate the distances involved or who are comfortable using domestic flights to improve the itinerary flow.
Complete Uganda Primate & Wildlife Safari
A longer tailor-made Uganda safari bringing together Murchison Falls, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi and, where it genuinely improves the route, Lake Mburo or Mgahinga. This style of journey suits travellers wanting the broadest contrast between primates, savannah wildlife, rivers, forests and changing landscapes.
Safari Experiences in Uganda
What Makes Uganda Exceptional for a Safari?
Uganda stands apart because a single journey can combine intimate primate encounters with classic African safari experiences. You can trek through rainforest for mountain gorillas, follow chimpanzees beneath the Kibale canopy, take a boat safari on the Kazinga Channel or Nile, search for wildlife across open savannah and explore volcanic landscapes in the south-west.

What to Pack for a Uganda Safari
Packing for Uganda needs to account for both rainforest trekking and conventional safari days. For gorilla and chimpanzee tracking, sturdy walking or hiking footwear with good grip, long trousers, lightweight long sleeves and a waterproof outer layer are particularly useful. A small daypack, sun protection, insect repellent and binoculars also belong on the list, while neutral, breathable clothing works well for game drives and boat safaris.
Conditions in the forest can change quickly, so clothing that handles mud, humidity and rain is more useful than dressing purely for warm weather. If your itinerary includes domestic flights, baggage limits may also be more restrictive than on international services. We confirm the requirements for your particular route and help you plan what to bring before departure.
A Different Kind of African Safari
Uganda rewards travellers who want more than one style of wildlife experience. A single journey can move from mountain gorillas and chimpanzees in dense forest to boat safaris, savannah game drives and remote northern landscapes. The key is careful planning around permits, travel time and the right balance between trekking and conventional safari days.
